Boating Tips - Testing a Dead Boat Engine

Testing a Dead Boat Engine

Most mechanical breakdowns are a result of minor problems. These can often be repaired without the aid of others. In the case of boat malfunction, here are a few trouble shooting tips to keep in mind before heading out on the water.

If the engine fails to start:

1) Check the fuel supply

2) Make sure the shift lever is dis-engaged and in the neutral position.

3) Throttle up the engine a little and try again.

4) Check the battery to make sure replacement is not necessary.

5) Check cables and terminals for poor or corroded connections.

6) Replace the fuel filter.

7) Check all fuses to make sure none have shorted out or are faulty.

8) Check for proper choke operation

If these suggestions fail you on the water you should contact help in returning to the dock.
